TWO-WAY RADIO BATTERY: How to Prolong the Life Cycle

The two-way radio rechargeable battery, whether nickel or lithium ion, requires specific care to prolong the life cycle. There are 2 important stages of a battery – 1) the initial charge and 2) the maintenance. These two steps will help maximize the life of a walkie-talkie battery.

A brand new nickel or lithium ion rechargeable battery should be charged before initial use. Typically 12 hours is sufficient. Subsequent recharging, also known as maintenance, differs greatly between nickel and lithium ion rechargeable batteries.

The maintenance of the battery depends largely on the type. In regards to nickel rechargeable batteries, since they suffer from “memory effect”, it is recommended to fully charge and fully discharge the unit on a regular basis. Memory effect is found in nickel batteries. If they are repeatedly partially discharged before recharging, the battery will “forget” it is able to discharge further. Lithium ion rechargeable batteries, on the other hand, do not suffer from memory effect. The greater the overcharge and the deeper the average discharge on lithium ion batteries, the fewer cycles it will last. For example, a battery which is overcharged and discharged 100% several times a day lasts fewer cycles than a battery that receives less of an overcharge and is discharged to 50% per day. Further, a battery that receives minimal overcharging and averages only 25% discharge lasts even longer.
