FCC LICENSING FOR TWO-WAY RADIOS EXPLAINED
"FCC Licensing process can be extremely confusing. The first step is to know what system your radio operates," explains Shasta Sowards and Jennifer Sheppard, owners of SJ Linking Systems.
General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) two-way radios are subject to the rules and regulations of the FCC. All operators using GMRS frequencies must obtain a radio license before using the two-way radios. The FCC Form 160 is the first form that must be completed and is located at: www.fcc.gov/frnreg. With this form the FCC Registration Number (FRN) can then be assigned. The next forms required are Form 159 and Form 605 and can be found on the FCC website: www.fcc.gov/formpage.html.
Business Radio Service (BRS) two-way radios and higher are also required FCC licensing. To apply for a business license, getting an FCC Coordinator is necessary. The fees the coordinators charge vary from company to company. The coordinator will handle all the paperwork and filings needed to complete the application process.
The only two-way radio not required to be licensed by the FCC is one operating on the 900 MHz frequency, like the Motorola Digital DTR Series.
Application forms can be downloaded directly from the FCC website www.fcc.gov or requested through the FCC Forms Hotline 1-800-418-FORM.
